Tehran warns of forceful response as leaders call Israeli assault a war crime and violation of sovereignty
By Ali Muattar | June 14, 2025
In the wake of deadly Israeli airstrikes on multiple Iranian cities, including densely populated areas of Tehran, the Islamic Republic of Iran has vowed a decisive, lawful, and powerful response. The strikes, which reportedly killed senior commanders, scientists, and civilians, have triggered a full-spectrum diplomatic, military, and legal mobilization from Tehran.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian directly condemned the attack, branding it a “barbaric assault” and promising that “the aggressor will regret its actions.”
What Happened?
Before dawn on June 13, Israeli warplanes launched a series of airstrikes across Iran. Multiple reports confirm that key military and scientific targets were hit, along with residential areas in Tehran and nearby cities. These attacks resulted in the martyrdom of top IRGC generals, nuclear scientists, and dozens of civilians.
This follows months of escalating regional tensions—particularly in Gaza—and multiple warnings from Iran against Israeli and Western provocations.
Pezeshkian: “A Lawful, Measured, Yet Regret-Inducing Response”
In an address to the nation, President Masoud Pezeshkian stated:
“The Islamic Republic’s legitimate and powerful response will make the enemy regret its folly.”
He emphasized that Iran’s reply will comply with international law but will be “sufficiently strong to force Israel to understand the consequences of its reckless actions.”
This rhetoric reflects both confidence and control—two qualities Tehran wants to project globally amid calls for restraint and diplomacy.
Government: “Playing with Fire”
In an official statement, the Iranian government went further, labeling the Israeli strikes a “criminal act of war” and accusing Israel of “openly assassinating” leaders and civilians.
“The overnight aggression by the Zionist regime proves it is a lawless entity. It assassinates in broad daylight before the eyes of the world,” the statement read.
The government warned that “initiating war with Iran is playing with fire,” especially during ongoing nuclear negotiations with global powers. According to Tehran, the strike was an attempt by Israel to sabotage Iran’s growing diplomatic influence and derail nuclear diplomacy.
IRGC Commander: “The Gates of Hell Will Open”
Brigadier General Mohammad Pakpour, newly appointed commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), echoed the sentiment of vengeance:
“This criminal act by the Zionist regime against Iran’s national security and territorial integrity will not go unanswered… The gates of hell will soon open on this murderous regime.”
This bold language signals a firm military posture, potentially hinting at a coming asymmetric or regional response that could involve Iran’s allies in Lebanon, Iraq, Syria, or Yemen.
Ministry of Foreign Affairs: U.S. Is Complicit
Iran’s Foreign Ministry placed full blame on both Israel and the United States, accusing Washington of coordinating or approving the attack:
“This is a clear breach of Article 2(4) of the UN Charter and a blatant act of aggression… The United States, as the principal supporter of this regime, must bear responsibility for the dangerous consequences.”
Iran invoked Article 51 of the UN Charter, asserting its right to self-defense, and summoned the Swiss ambassador, who represents U.S. interests in Iran, demanding official accountability from Washington.
Regional Reactions and Growing Global Fallout
Hezbollah: “Israel Will Regret This Brutality”
From Beirut, Hezbollah’s Sheikh Naim Qassem called the Israeli strike a “criminal act fully supported by Washington”, affirming Hezbollah’s solidarity with Iran and warning of major consequences:
“Neither the Israeli enemy nor the United States will succeed in undermining Iran’s resolve. Iran will emerge stronger.”
This reflects broader Axis of Resistance unity, encompassing armed movements in Lebanon, Iraq, Syria, and Yemen—all of which could be activated in Iran’s broader strategic retaliation.
Legal Grounds and UN Charter Violations
Experts in international law say that the Israeli strikes—if verified—represent a clear breach of Article 2(4) of the UN Charter, which prohibits the use of force against the sovereignty or political independence of any state.
Iran’s invocation of Article 51—the inherent right to self-defense—is significant. It not only legitimizes retaliation under international law, but it also signals to allies and adversaries that Iran will not act recklessly but within a strategic legal framework.
What Happens Next?
While Iran has yet to reveal the timing or nature of its retaliation, analysts believe the response could involve:
- Cyberattacks on Israeli infrastructure
- Ballistic missile strikes on military bases in the Golan Heights or Negev
- Proxy retaliation via Hezbollah, Hashd al-Shaabi, or Houthis
- Targeted diplomatic and legal escalation through international forums
The central message from Tehran is clear: Iran did not start this war—but it will determine how it ends.
A Nation United by Martyrdom
The airstrikes also targeted and reportedly killed revered figures such as Major General Mohammad Bagheri and Major General Hossein Salami, whose martyrdom is seen in Iran as a symbol of national pride and resilience.
These deaths have galvanized public sentiment, with thousands gathering in Tehran for funeral processions, chanting anti-Israel and anti-U.S. slogans, and demanding justice.
President Pezeshkian urged the public to remain calm and resist the psychological warfare being spread through foreign media. He framed the assault as both a tragedy and a moment of national awakening.
Final Word: The Reckoning Is Coming
Iran’s measured but firm language suggests retaliation is inevitable, but not reckless. Tehran wants to preserve its international legitimacy while sending a clear deterrent signal.
As global powers weigh in—and with the UN Security Council under mounting pressure to respond—Iran has positioned itself as both victim and defender. The Islamic Republic has drawn a red line, and now the world watches for what comes next.
